Textures of Slowness

This talk examined relations between race, disability, and matter in the transnational 19th century, particularly those understood as implicated in the conceptual and material history of “slowness.” This research was framed as part of Professor Chen’s current book project on chemical intimacies, which is concerned with the political contingencies of forms and materials of intoxication.

Mel Y. Chen is Associate Professor of Gender & Women’s Studies and Director of the Center for the Study of Sexual Culture at University of California, Berkley.
