We sit within the confines of a shipping container, where people are rendered commodity and turf is marked for value. Chula and Pal create competition on a Boyle Heights street corner. Nasir and Porter offer medicinal intake as artistic practice. Sik and Dori turn to drastic measures in order to save their family. Dry Swallow explores surrogacy, consumption, and substance abuse, while provoking the question: who’s allowed a healthy life?

Lucas Baisch ’20 MFA (playwright) is a Guatemalan-Mexican-American playwright and visual artist, originally from San Francisco. His work has been read and developed at the Goodman Theatre, The Neo-Futurists, Playwrights Horizons, Chicago Dramatists, Victory Gardens Theater, Links Hall, Gloucester Stage, American Theatre Company, InFusion Theatre Company, Chicago Fringe, The DeYoung Museum, SF Playground, Lambda Literary, etc. Productions include: REFRIGERATOR;(First Floor Theatre),The Scavengers (The Healy Theater at DePaul University), A Measure of Normalcy (Gloucester Stage Company), and collaboration on The Arrow Cleans House (The Neo-Futurists). His artwork has been presented at Elsewhere Museum, the Electronic Literature Organization, gallery no one, the RISD Museum, and will be presented at ACRE gallery in 2020. Coming up, his plays import speech_memory will be workshopped at Cutting Ball Theater and On the Y-Axis will have a reading at The Bushwick Starr. Shayok Misha Chowdhurry (director) is a queer Bengali director, writer, and theater-maker based in Brooklyn. He is currently creating work in The Public Theater’s Devised Theater Working Group, BRIClab, and The Drama League’s Next Stage Residency, and recently in the Soho Rep Writer/Director Lab, as a New York Theatre Workshop 2050 Fellow, and a Resident Director at The Flea. Recent/ongoing collaborations: MukhAgni (Ars Nova & Under the Radar) with Kameron Neal; Beast Thing (The Drama League) with Aleshea Harris; SPEECH (BRIC & Playwrights Horizons Theater School) with Lightning Rod Special; How the White Girl Got Her Spots and Other 90s Trivia (Joe’s Pub & Ars Nova) with Laura Grill Jaye; rasgos asiaticos (Soho Rep & CalArts Center for New Performance) and Your Healing Is Killing Me (PlayMakers Rep) with Virginia Grise. Misha had also made work at SPACE on Ryder Farm, Clubbed Thumb, HERE Arts Center, NYMF, Signature Theatre, Bushwick Starr, Double Edge Theatre, Vineyard Arts Project, New Orleans Film Festival, and Nashville Rep.
